Windows 11 free upgrade for qualifying computers
Microsoft has released Windows 11 on Oct 5, 2021. Those with a recent purchase of a Desktop and Laptop might have all the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11 for free. Older Desktops and Laptops might not be able to upgrade. One of the main reasons might be because of the *Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 requirement.
The link below will take you to the FAQs for Windows 11 upgrade.
There is still time and you should not rush to update your Laptop or Desktop but Microsoft reserves the right to end the free upgrade. Windows 10 will still be supported for a few more years but there are a few versions of windows 10 that have a End of life. A full list is available at Microsoft Lifecycle Windows 10 Home and Pro . I am listing releases that are ending soon. If the Version of Windows 10 is not below then it has already ended.
Windows 10 Home and Pro itself will have a retirement date of October 14, 2025
Version Start End Date
Version 22H2 Oct 18, 2022 May 14, 2024
If you plan on building your own system or have someone build a Desktop for you, ensure the Motherboard (MB) has an option to add a TMP V2.0 Chip. Each Brand of MB(Gigabyte, Asus, MSI, Ect.) will have a specification for the TMP chip needed. Review the Motherboard User Manual to purchase the correct type of chip.
Newer Motherboards will have the TMP Chip onboard with no need to purchase a TMP V2.0 Chip
